EXIF Metadata Field Reference

EXIF and related metadata describe parts of an image file that may not be visible when you open the picture. The exact fields depend on the camera, operating system, editor and file format.

Metadata is file data, not magic.

GPS coordinates can reveal where an image was captured, while device, timestamp and software fields can add context about how it was made. Their presence is not guaranteed, and removing metadata does not remove information that is visibly present in the pixels.

For text or secrets visible in an image, metadata removal is not a substitute for proper redaction. Privacy Guides warns against using blur to redact text.
