What can image metadata reveal?

Depending on the file and software that created it, metadata can include dimensions, capture dates, camera settings, software names, location coordinates and other descriptive fields. Not every image contains every field, and an empty result does not prove that a file contains no hidden information.

FileTools reads the selected file in your browser. The image is not uploaded to a FileTools processing server for this viewer.

Understand common metadata fields.

Use the metadata field reference to see what common EXIF, GPS, camera and software fields mean before deciding what to remove.

Image metadata questions.

Does every photo contain GPS data?

No. GPS fields are optional and depend on the device, settings and software that created or edited the image.

Does removing metadata remove pixels?

No. Metadata is separate from the visible image data. A metadata stripper can remove embedded fields while leaving the image itself visually unchanged.

Is metadata the same as the filename?

No. A filename is external to the embedded metadata structures that this viewer inspects.
